How Our Lives Intersected
Meet Hendrix and Sindi Mumba
Hendria and Sindi, both from Zambia, overcame financial hardships to pursue their dreams. Sindi, an orphan who had to leave school in the 8th grade, vowed to help children through education. Hendrix moved to the US in 2008 to support his family and send money back home. In 2015, they were able to establish a school in a low-income Zambian neighborhood for orphans and vulnerable children who lacked access to education. Over the past eight years, they have dedicated themselves to this mission, profoundly impacting the community by breaking down barriers and offering hope through education. They now operate 3 schools that are ranked #8 out of 208 in the capital city of Lusaka, and have over 1000 students enrolled. With the support of BAREMI, Hendrix was able to return to Zambia full-time beginning in 2024 to pursue his and Sindi's calling.
Meet Mark and Suellen Moody
Married since 1999, Mark and Suellen, have three wonderful adult children. While active in the business world, they strive daily to serve and love those around them as devoted followers of Jesus. For over two decades, they have been active in their local church, taking on volunteer leadership roles within their faith community.
Mark and Suellen joined a new church in 2022, where they met Hendrix Mumba. Through various volunteer activities, they built a friendship with him. During a time of prayer, Suellen asked Hendrix how they could pray for him, and he mentioned his school in Zambia. This conversation sparked their journey to support Hendrix and his family, leading to the establishment of the US nonprofit BAREMI, Inc. Suellen visited Zambia in 2023, which was a life-changing experience deepening their commitment to Hendrix and Sindi’s mission. Mark and Suellen remain dedicated to supporting the work God is doing in the lives of these beautiful people.
Meet the Espey Family
Piper Espey is a proud mother to three amazing adult children, all of whom are married. She is a full-time metal artist but was a born teacher, with experience in the fitness industry, women's ministry, elementary school education, and special needs education, primarily focusing on children with autism. She is also the Director of Education and an instructor for the Metal Arts Guild of Georgia.
On Mother's Day of 2023, while visiting their son Grayson's church, Piper and her husband Randal Espey were introduced to Hendrix Mumba. Grayson had invited them to sit in on a short BAREMI board meeting where he serves as treasurer. Little did Hendrix know that Randal and Piper brought with them years of experience in building school programs, fundraising, and teaching. Following the meeting, Randal shared words of encouragement with Hendrix, and a friendship began. After much prayer, the Espeys felt led to join the efforts to help Hendrix and his wife, Sindi.
A follow-up meeting was scheduled between the Espeys and Hendrix for when they returned from vacation two weeks later. Unfortunately, that meeting never happened, as Randal was tragically killed at the Atlanta airport prior to leaving for their vacation. But as we know, God brings beauty from ashes. To honor Randal's legacy, the Mumba family decided to name the new school that is being planned in Randal's name.
Piper knew that God had planted a deep love in her heart for the children in Africa and that she had been carrying this her entire life. She also knows that God has been preparing her for this time, her entire life. She is now committed to making this her life's work and has come alongside BAREMI and the Mumba family to support the current schools, teachers, and staff, as well as being involved in building more schools in Africa. To God be the glory.
