  • How Our Lives Intersected

    Meet Hendrix and Sindi Mumba

We started with 17 students, we now have over 1,000 students in 3 different campuses.”

Hendrix and Sindi’s journey began in Zambia, where his passion for faith and education emerged early. After his father’s passing, he sold cigarettes at 13 to support his family and schooling. In 1998, he met Sindi at church, bonding over shared hardships. They married in 2003, committed to their faith and a vision for education.

In 2007, Hendrix traveled to the U.S., earning a degree in Pastoral Theology while sending money home. Moved by the struggles of street children, he and Sindi purchased land in Lusaka in 2015, starting a school with 17 students. Witnessing children rummaging through garbage, they provided not just education but also food and stability.

Their efforts expanded, and today they operate three schools, serving over 1,000 children. To address financial challenges, Hendrix worked with S. And M. to start a non-profit, B.I., in 2023, enabling them to raise funds and retain teachers. With this support, Hendrix returned to Zambia full-time in 2024 to oversee the schools.

Beyond education, their work provides jobs for local teachers, strengthening the community. With ongoing support, Hendrix and Sindi aim to expand their impact, breaking the cycle of poverty through faith and education.

    Meet the Espey Family

Piper Espey is a proud mother to three amazing adult children, all of whom are married. She is a full-time metal artist but was a born teacher, with experience in the fitness industry, women's ministry, elementary school education, and special needs education, primarily focusing on children with autism. She is also the Director of Education and an instructor for the Metal Arts Guild of Georgia.

On Mother's Day of 2023, while visiting their son Grayson's church, Piper and her husband Randal Espey were introduced to Hendrix Mumba. Grayson had invited them to sit in on a short BAREMI board meeting where he serves as treasurer. Little did Hendrix know that Randal and Piper brought with them years of experience in building school programs, fundraising, and teaching. Following the meeting, Randal shared words of encouragement with Hendrix, and a friendship began. After much prayer, the Espeys felt led to join the efforts to help Hendrix and his wife, Sindi.

A follow-up meeting was scheduled between the Espeys and Hendrix for when they returned from vacation two weeks later. Unfortunately, that meeting never happened, as Randal was tragically killed at the Atlanta airport prior to leaving for their vacation. But as we know, God brings beauty from ashes. To honor Randal's legacy, the Mumba family decided to name the new school that is being planned in Randal's name.

Piper knew that God had planted a deep love in her heart for the children in Africa and that she had been carrying this her entire life. She also knows that God has been preparing her for this time, her entire life. She is now committed to making this her life's work and has come alongside BAREMI and the Mumba family to support the current schools, teachers, and staff, as well as being involved in building more schools in Africa. To God be the glory.

  • Belonging means having a safe place to learn, grow, and dream. With access to education and food, they receive more than just nourishment and knowledge—they gain security and the confidence that they belong.

Dignity means feeling valued and respected. With food and education, children gain hope and opportunity, while teachers find purpose in shaping brighter futures.

Education is more than just learning—it’s hope. It provides children with the tools to dream beyond their circumstances and teachers with the purpose to guide them toward a brighter future.

  • Orphan and Vulnerable Children Support: Implement a comprehensive program to provide education and nutritious meals for the orphans and vulnerable children under our care. This will include scholarships, school supplies, uniforms, and nutritional support.

Teacher Enrichment: Programs and ongoing training to enhance teachers' knowledge, leadership, and creativity, positively impacting the students in the schools.

Modernization of Schools: improving infrastructure and integrating technology to provide quality education. It includes building better facilities, expanding access to digital resources, and implementing updated curriculum to prepare students for a competitive future.
